Kate Moetaua (author) and Bruce Potter (illustrator) were responsible for Papa’s Donuts a few years ago. Now there’s this story based in the same Polynesian community, and with a cheeky self-reference in one of the illustrations as a character reads the previous book. Junior is always borrowing Papa’s jandals. Mama eventually finds Papa a new pair of really thick red jandals at a local market, a task made more difficult by the size of Papa’s feet. So when Junior forgets to pick them up after playing league with his cousins, he has to try to track them down. He tries the field, the shop, the beach, school, Aunty Aki’s house, and under the house where the dog might have them. But they turn up in an even less likely place. There’s a lovely sense of community in the story and the illustrations, and any addition to the small number of picture books with stories of island communities in New Zealand is welcome. Lots of fun.
