This is another wonderfully simple picture book, but this time with sound effects (written, not audio). By Ellie Sandal, Birdsong tells of a series of birds alighting on a particular branch and chirping in various variations, making a cumulative song until: “A huge bird with a mighty beak joins them with a piercing shriek,” and chases all the others away.  But, a butterfly adds to the weight, the branch breaks, bird falls: “Oh. The biggest bird, / the loudest call… / ..but whatever could have made him fall?” and the final page shows the big bird and butterfly on the ground, and the other birds back in the tree on another branch. Again, elegantly, beautifully simple.
